The Brazilian government has officially announced Nigeria’s entry as a partner country in the BRICS multinational bloc. This information was released by Brazil’s Foreign Ministry on Friday.
Brazil noted that both BRICS and Nigeria align in their goals, particularly in promoting collaboration among Global South nations and advocating for reforms in international organizations.
The statement highlighted that Nigeria, with the world’s sixth-largest population and being Africa’s largest, is a significant economy on the continent. It shares similar interests with other BRICS members and is actively involved in enhancing South-South cooperation and advocating for reforms in global governance—key priorities during Brazil’s current presidency.
As of January 1, Brazil has been serving as the BRICS president for 2025, following Russia’s term. Nigeria now joins Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan as the ninth partner country of BRICS, a category established during the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan in October 2024.
