Governor Monday Okpebholo’s commitment to road infrastructure and community development in Edo State has moved beyond rhetoric into visible, state-wide transformation. From Edo South through Edo Central to Edo North, the scale and speed of construction reflect a deliberate agenda to reconnect communities, boost commerce and modernise the state’s transport network.
Unlike previous administrations that distanced themselves from federal roads, Governor Okpebholo adopted a people-first philosophy: federal roads within Edo primarily serve Edo people. On that basis, his administration intervened decisively in critical highways long abandoned to decay.
Major interventions include the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the Benin–Ekpoma–Auchi–Okpella–Abuja Highway, a key commercial corridor linking Edo to northern Nigeria. The once deplorable road is now being restored, reducing travel time, improving safety and strengthening interstate trade.
Similarly, the Benin–Sapele Road, previously notorious for gridlock and deterioration, has been taken over and reconstructed, easing movement between Benin, Sapele and Warri. Rehabilitation efforts also extend to the Auchi–Igarra–Ibillo Road in Edo North and segments of the Benin–Asaba corridor, enhancing regional connectivity.
Governor Okpebholo’s road projects cut across all districts. In Edo South are: the rehabilitation of Benin–Sapele–Warri Road, upgrades on Upper Mission Road, Old Sapele Road, Upper Ekenhuan and other inner-city arteries, improving urban mobility.
In Edo Central is the construction of a 36-kilometre road linking Uromi, Udomi and surrounding communities, alongside works on the Ekpoma–Uromi–Ubiaja Road, boosting agricultural trade and local commerce.
In Edo North is the rehabilitation of strategic corridors in Akoko Edo and surrounding communities, improving access for farming and mining areas to markets.
A defining feature of the administration is the construction of two major flyovers in Benin City – at Ikpoba Hill (Ramat Park) and along Sapele Road (Adesuwa Junction). These projects are designed to permanently resolve chronic congestion at key junctions and enhance traffic flow towards Edo Central and Edo North corridors. They signal a shift toward modern urban traffic management in the state capital.
The benefits of these projects are substantial. They include: (1) reduced transportation costs and travel time, (2) improved safety and reduced accidents, (3) increased agricultural and commercial activity, (4) job creation during construction and maintenance, and (5) greater access to schools, hospitals and markets.
Governor Okpebholo’s development vision is also evident in Udomi, his home community in Edo Central. Ongoing projects, including a modern town hall, a specialist hospital, a holiday resort, a College of Nursing and improved road and utility infrastructure, are transforming the area from a small settlement into an emerging urban hub.
In sum, Governor Okpebholo’s infrastructure drive is not merely about building roads; it is about building connectivity, opportunity and sustainable growth. His interventions on both federal and state roads reflect a pragmatic and inclusive governance style aimed at long-term prosperity for Edo State.
