Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja for Brazil to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 30). He is representing President Bola Tinubu at the summit, which is being hosted by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the city of Belém from November 6 to 7.
The conference, themed “Climate Action and Implementation,” will bring together world leaders, development partners, and business executives to focus on critical issues such as adaptation, forests, biodiversity, and climate justice.
Key Engagements at the Summit
During the two-day event, Vice President Shettima’s schedule includes:
· Presenting Nigeria’s national statement on climate action at the general plenary session.
· Participating in the launch of the Tropical Forest Forever Fund.
· Attending high-level roundtables chaired by President Lula on Climate and Nature, Energy Transition, and a review of the Paris Agreement.
Focus on Carbon Market and Bilateral Ties
On the sidelines of the summit, the Vice President will hold strategic bilateral meetings aimed at establishing Nigeria’s participation in the global carbon markets. This initiative is projected to unlock between $2.5 billion and $3 billion annually in carbon finance for Nigeria over the next decade, providing crucial funding for the nation’s climate goals.
Following the climate conference, Shettima will travel to Brasilia for a reciprocal official visit with his Brazilian counterpart, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin. This visit aims to build on the Memoranda of Understanding signed during Alckmin’s trip to Nigeria in June, further strengthening bilateral cooperation in areas such as defence, agriculture, energy, and culture.
The Vice President is expected to return to Nigeria after concluding his engagements in Brazil.
