President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has lifted the six-month state of emergency in Rivers State, reinstating Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and the State House of Assembly.
In a statement, Tinubu explained that the March 18 emergency was declared to halt a constitutional crisis that threatened governance and left vital economic assets exposed. He said the action, taken under Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution, was necessary after failed mediation efforts.
The President thanked the National Assembly, traditional rulers, and Rivers people for their support, while acknowledging those who legally challenged his decision as part of democratic practice.
Citing improved understanding among stakeholders, Tinubu said the conditions for emergency rule had ended. He announced that Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Nma Odu, and Speaker Martins Amaewhule with lawmakers would resume office on September 18.
He urged state leaders nationwide to embrace peace and cooperation, stressing that only stability can guarantee delivery of democracy’s benefits.
