Former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, has been summoned to appear before the Federal Capital Territory Magistrate Court in Wuse Zone II, Abuja, on September 5, 2025, over allegations of tax evasion and underpayment.
According to a summons dated August 21, 2025, the Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS) accused Melaye of failing to pay his Personal Income Tax for 2023 and 2024, while also under-declaring and underpaying taxes for 2020, 2021, and 2022.
Records show that Melaye paid only N85,000.08 in 2019, N100,000.08 in 2020, N120,000 in 2021, and N1 million in 2022, despite declaring a much higher income. For instance, in 2022, he reportedly declared an income of over N6.5 million.
The FCT-IRS explained that an administrative assessment was issued on May 23, 2025, but after Melaye failed to respond within 30 days, a Best of Judgment Assessment was raised on June 23, 2025. His total tax liabilities were assessed at N234.9 million for 2023 and N274.7 million for 2024.
The Service stated that Melaye’s actions constitute a breach of Section 41 of the Personal Income Tax Act, stressing that unless he objects within 30 days or provides supporting documents, the assessment will be deemed final, and recovery proceedings will commence.
