In line with Section 14(2)(b) of the Nigerian Constitution, which affirms that “the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government,” His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has embarked on a series of decisive and strategic actions to address security challenges in Edo State.
Since assuming office, Governor Okpebholo has prioritized the eradication of insecurity, with a particular focus on curbing the scourge of secret cult rivalries that have endangered communities and led to the loss of both innocent lives and gang members.
One of the boldest moves of his administration is the signing into law a 21-year jail term for individuals involved in cultism, including their sponsors. This stringent legislation has already served as a strong deterrent to cult-related activities across the state. In addition, the government has begun demolishing properties identified as hideouts for cultists and kidnappers—sending a clear and unyielding message that Edo State will no longer tolerate criminal sanctuaries.
To enhance the capacity of security agencies, the administration has acquired new operational vehicles, advanced surveillance equipment, and drones. These assets have been deployed to support a newly established joint task force, comprising the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other security outfits. Equipped with aerial surveillance tools such as drones and helicopters, this joint task force is actively patrolling forests across the state to root out kidnappers, armed bandits, and violent herdsmen.
In a strategic effort to bolster community policing and grassroots intelligence, the government has recruited approximately 1,500 personnel into the Edo State Security Network. These recruits are undergoing intensive training at the security facility in Okada and will soon be deployed across various communities to reinforce local security efforts.
The proactive and integrated security initiatives championed by Governor Okpebholo are already yielding visible results. Reports show a significant decline in cult-related violence and other criminal activities, restoring a sense of safety and confidence among Edo residents.
Governor Okpebholo’s unwavering dedication to safeguarding the lives and property of the people of Edo State is evident. His administration remains committed to implementing sustainable strategies that ensure long-term peace, security, and prosperity for all.

Hon. Pius Alile
