The Kaduna State Police Command has issued a warning to former Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai to stop making frivolous and harmful accusations against law enforcement agencies.
On Thursday, El-Rufai claimed that the Kaduna State government was using the police as part of a “kidnapping gang” led by Governor Uba Sani to detain Ja’afar Sani, a former commissioner in his administration. He posted on X, stating: “Our colleague and versatile former commissioner during the El-Rufai Administration – Mallam Jafaru Sani has been abducted in Kaduna by Uba Sani’s kidnapping gang claiming to be the police, this afternoon!…”
In response, police spokesperson Mansir Hassan released a statement on Friday asserting that there is no kidnapping gang within the Nigerian Police Force. The statement clarified that El-Rufai’s claims regarding Jafaru Sani being detained without proper police reports or legal charges were unfounded.
Hassan emphasized the lawful role of the police, which is established by the 1999 Constitution and the Police Act, stating that the police are tasked with maintaining peace and have the right to arrest and investigate those suspected of wrongdoing.
The statement encouraged the public, especially those in positions of authority, to refrain from making unverified and baseless accusations against security forces and to exercise caution before making public statements. It highlighted that unsubstantiated claims not only mislead the public but could also undermine law enforcement. Citizens feeling wronged are encouraged to seek legal remedies instead of making inflammatory remarks that could escalate tensions.
