A Federal High Court in Abuja has issued an injunction preventing the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions from taking disciplinary action against Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Judge Obiora Egwuatu issued the order on Tuesday in response to an ex parte application from Akpoti-Uduaghan’s legal team.
On February 20, the Kogi Central Senator had a confrontation with Senate President Godswill Akpabio regarding her assigned seat, which she refused to accept. She challenged Akpabio’s authority by continuously raising points of order despite being dismissed.
Senator Yemi Adaramodu of Ekiti South expressed that this incident has harmed the reputation of the Senate, as efforts to clarify the situation have failed and public opinion has already formed based on Akpoti-Uduaghan’s actions.
As a consequence of this incident, the Senate referred Akpoti-Uduaghan to the Ethics Committee for a disciplinary review during a plenary session last Tuesday, where Adaramodu’s report was discussed and accepted. The Senate unanimously voted in favor of this referral, with Akpabio directing the committee to evaluate the situation and provide feedback to the Senate.
