Leaders and stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday began arriving at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja for its 102nd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
The meeting, scheduled to commence at 2 p.m., has drawn governors, former ministers, and other top figures, including ex-Deputy National Chairman Chief Bode George and former Minister of Information Prof. Jerry Gana.
According to a statement shared on the party’s official X handle, the NEC will deliberate on key matters, such as the report of the National Zoning Committee and preparations for the party’s national convention, fixed for November 15–16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The atmosphere at the secretariat was lively, with members singing and cheering as party leaders arrived. The session is viewed as part of the PDP’s renewed push to reposition itself ahead of the 2027 general elections. “Today’s meeting reflects the PDP’s shared vision and determination to deliver for Nigerians in 2027,” the party said.
The zoning committee, chaired by Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, with Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal as vice chairman and Plateau Governor Caleb Mutfwang as secretary, was set up in July to distribute the 19 National Working Committee (NWC) positions between the North and South.
At a stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos last Thursday, southern leaders agreed to allocate key offices: Deputy National Chairman and National Publicity Secretary to the South-South; National Secretary and National Auditor to the South-West; and Deputy National Secretary and Financial Secretary to the South-East. With Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s backing, the National Secretary slot was micro-zoned to Oyo, while Akwa Ibom secured the Publicity Secretary position.
The acting NWC, led by Ambassador Umar Damagum, will end its tenure in December. To forestall internal disputes, the party’s 101st NEC in July approved the November convention, to be chaired by Adamawa Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, with Osun Governor Ademola Adeleke as vice chairman and Enugu Governor Peter Mbah as secretary.
