Defection Pays Off, You Won’t Labour in Vain — Akpabio Assures Senator Imasuen

Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday formally received Senator Neda Imasuen—chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct and Public Petitions—into the fold of the All Progressives Congress.

Imasuen, who represents Edo South, defected on 12 June in Benin City, blaming the Labour Party’s internal leadership crisis for his decision. In a letter read on the Senate floor, he said the move followed “wide-ranging consultations with constituents, stakeholders, and supporters” who wanted Edo South “fully represented in a party with national prominence.”

The senator added that joining the APC would allow him to align with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda while continuing to serve Edo South and advance national development through his legislative duties.

After the letter was read, Akpabio congratulated Imasuen with a quip: “You shall no longer ‘labour’ in vain. Kindly approach the chair for a handshake.” Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele also hailed the defection, urging the newcomer to work for his new party and the nation.
