The Labour Party (LP) crisis took a significant turn yesterday as faction Plans National Convention in 90 Days

Two of the main factions embroiled in a power struggle—the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), under the leadership of Comrade Joe Ajaero, and the National Caretaker Committee (NCC), led by Senator Esther Nenadi-Usman—formed an alliance against the National Working Committee (NWC), headed by factional Chairman Julius Abure.

Ajaero participated in an LP stakeholders meeting chaired by Senator Nenadi-Usman in Abuja, where important resolutions concerning the party’s restructuring were ratified by the National Executive Council (NEC).

The meeting included representatives from Abia State Governor Alex Otti and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, as well as NLC General Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja, Chairperson of the Women Commission Salamatou Aliu, Board of Trustees (BoT) Chairman Comrade SOZ Ejiofor, Secretary Comrade Salisu Mohammed, and representatives from the TUC President.

This marked the first meeting of the decision-making body following the Supreme Court’s ruling on the prolonged leadership dispute.

According to the communiqué, the NEC approved the expansion of the National Working Committee (NWC) and set in motion plans for an all-inclusive national convention within 90 days.

Additional resolutions included establishing a new national secretariat in Abuja, mobilizing 10 million members nationwide within 30 days, and organizing ward, local government, and state congresses to facilitate delegate elections.

The communiqué stated: “The NEC sanctioned the expansion of the NWC structures and established processes that will lead to conducting an all-inclusive and expansive National Convention within 90 days, following the terms of a settlement agreed upon with INEC on April 26, 2022, and finalized between the NLC and LP on June 27, 2022.

“This includes appointing three Deputy National Chairmen to assist National Chairman Senator Nenadi Esther Usman in the NWC transition government, National Caretaker Committee (NCC).

“Three Deputy National Secretaries will also be appointed to support the National Secretary, Senator Darlington Nwokocha.

“Furthermore, NWC members will be appointed to fill vacancies within the National Caretaker Committee (NCC).

“The formation of Standing and Ad-hoc Committees, alongside their memberships, will aid in the congress processes leading to the all-inclusive and expansive National Convention within 90 days.

“NEC approved the immediate opening and operation of the new Labour Party (LP) National Secretariat in Abuja and instructed INEC to promptly close the old National Secretariat located at No.2 IBM Haruna Street, Utako District, Abuja.

“Following this, an immediate nationwide mobilization of ten million (10,000,000) members into the party database will commence within thirty (30) days; this includes online membership registration with downloadable membership cards featuring unique identification numbers, revalidation of existing memberships, annual membership subscription payment of only N1,200, and registration of Support Groups, accompanied by downloadable Support Group Registration Certificates with unique identification numbers.”
