Former First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan has dismissed the idea of returning to Aso Rock Villa, stating that she will instead campaign alongside First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.
Jonathan, recognized for her forthright opinions, endorsed the concept of rotational leadership, emphasizing that the “turn-by-turn” approach is crucial for fostering national unity. She made these remarks while honoring the President’s daughter, Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, after receiving the Women Icon Leader of the Year award from Accolade Dynamics Limited in Abuja on Saturday night.
She expressed appreciation for Folashade’s support of women, affirming, “We are with you all the way,” and reaffirmed her belief in having one president at a time. Jonathan mentioned her past collaborative relationship with Senator Tinubu, which predates their time in Aso Rock, recalling how both she and her husband received support from the Tinubus during their 2011 presidential campaign.
Rather than considering a return to Aso Rock, Jonathan stated she would continue to back the First Lady and her husband. “I know her well; we worked together at every stage of our lives,” she said, emphasizing her loyalty despite any political affiliations.
Jonathan remarked on her commitment to supporting her friend, stating she will actively participate in the campaign but has no intention of returning to her previous role. She expressed satisfaction with her current quiet life, playfully mentioning that her youthful appearance stems from peace of mind.
She also advocated for the 35 percent affirmative action for women in governance, lamenting the National Assembly’s continual rejection of gender equality bills. “We are not seeking to take power from men but rather to support them,” she asserted.
Jonathan characterized the award as a recognition of collective efforts toward advancing women’s health and economic well-being. She expressed deep gratitude for the honor, highlighting her NGOs—the Aurora Richard Foundation and Women for Change and Development Initiative—which have empowered many women and youth through skill development and supported children needing critical surgeries abroad.
At the event, Accolade Dynamics’ Managing Director and CEO, Ms. Dofan Chizaram, described the occasion as a tribute to those who have greatly contributed to Nigeria and Africa through leadership and community service, emphasizing the importance of recognizing such individuals while they are still with us.
