Ayodele Fayose,Former Ekiti State Governor, openly discussed the escalating issues within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday, cautioning that the party risks complete failure without immediate reconciliation efforts.
During a live interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, monitored by Tunexreportes, Fayose expressed concern over the PDP’s internal chaos, attributing it to longstanding unresolved matters and a lack of leadership guidance.
“The party’s situation is unfortunate and regrettable. This trouble did not arise overnight. There has been no genuine effort at reconciliation or resolving disputes. Everyone is driven by self-interest—fighting for power and influence,” he remarked.
Using metaphors and proverbs, Fayose painted the PDP as a divided organization lacking cohesion and direction.
“When you fall on metal, may God save you. Everyone is just defending their own interests. When you try to sweep with one broom, you achieve little,” he stressed, highlighting the necessity for a united approach to restore the party.
“It’s undeniable that all is not well with the PDP. The state of affairs is troubling, and it will take a miracle to get this party back on track,” he noted.
He also pointed out the leadership gap within the party’s National Working Committee, asking, “Where is the peace? Where are the directives coming from?”
“This lack of organization is unprecedented. But I’m not here to place blame. The responsibility ultimately rests with the Working Committee.”
Addressing party authority and ongoing legal disputes, Fayose cautioned against ignoring court decisions.
“The court’s verdict is binding for all involved. The Supreme Court’s ruling regarding the party structure must be honored. You cannot build on a faulty foundation,” he remarked.
Fayose also commented on recent statements by former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, whom he likened to “a bulldozer” that requires careful handling.
“If someone says they will visit you at a specific time and actually shows up, it indicates a problem. Wike must be approached in a constructive manner,” he advised.
Reflecting on political power dynamics, Fayose argued that after President Bola Tinubu’s first term, the South should retain the presidency, warning against a power shift back to the North.
Although he is a member of the PDP, Fayose admitted to supporting Tinubu in the last election and noted that his support continues, emphasizing relative governance performance.
“When you compare the current situation with the past, you’d still favor Tinubu. The system is flawed, but he is managing a difficult circumstance,” he said.
When asked about potential presidential candidates for 2027, including Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, and Tinubu, he revealed that Makinde has denied any presidential aspirations, expressing he would not run against another Yoruba candidate.
Fayose concluded by advising Nigerians to temper their expectations, asserting that no leader can completely meet the public’s demands. “There will never be a moment when you can satisfy everyone in this country. Today, some are wishing for Jonathan to return—the same Jonathan they once dismissed,” he said.
