President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday held a closed-door meeting with Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin, a close associate of New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) leader and former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Jibrin, who represents Kiru/Bebeji federal constituency in Kano State and previously chaired the Appropriation Committee in the 8th House of Representatives, is known for his loyalty to Kwankwaso.
Speaking with State House correspondents after the meeting, Jibrin did not rule out the possibility of joining the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), though he remained guarded. “I don’t think this is the right time for that conversation, but everything is open—it’s a possibility,” he said. “What matters most is the stability and unity of the country. When we get to the bridge, we’ll cross it.”
Jibrin noted that his meeting with Tinubu should not raise eyebrows given the long-standing relationship between the President and Kwankwaso. “It’s not surprising that I visited the President. He and Senator Kwankwaso have enjoyed a cordial relationship for many years. I came to check on him and to discuss issues of national interest,” he said.
When asked if he was acting as a mediator amid recent tensions between Kwankwaso and the Presidency, Jibrin emphasized that both leaders remain committed to Nigeria’s progress. “They are seasoned politicians. The President is first-class in his political acumen, and Kwankwaso is equally experienced. Despite any disagreements, both are focused on Nigeria’s peace, unity, and prosperity,” he remarked.
Kwankwaso had recently criticized the Tinubu administration for what he called lopsided infrastructure development favoring the South. However, Jibrin downplayed the controversy, urging a nuanced view of the administration’s performance. “Every leader does his best, and assessments depend on perspective—whether you see the glass as half full or half empty,” he said. “Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and sometimes criticism can actually enrich national discourse and become a blessing in disguise.”
