Chief Dan Orbih, the National Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South-South region, asserted that the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, is not the party’s primary issue.
Instead, Orbih pointed to those with vested interests in running for the presidency without adhering to the PDP’s constitutional rules as the real problem. Speaking during the official handover of a new secretariat he donated to the party in Benin on Wednesday, he called on Acting National Chairman Amb. Iliya Damagun to organize congresses that would elect new leaders capable of revitalizing the PDP and restoring its former stature.
“While the PDP is a strong and resilient party, it faces challenges that must be addressed. Wike is not the source of our issues; the actual concern lies with individuals attempting to run for office without following party guidelines. We need to unite and collaborate with dedicated party members to rebuild and advance the PDP for future political contests. Despite the challenges, I assure you that the PDP in Edo is making a comeback,” he stated.
Orbih noted that the Edo PDP lost its previous office in January, which left members feeling distressed. After hearing grievances from party leaders and members, he promised them a suitable and permanent office, which he fulfilled by donating a new secretariat.
“With the commitment I made in a recent meeting, today marks the fulfillment of that promise. The PDP must not remain without a home. Since January 17, 2025, when our former chairman was removed from the previous office, the Edo PDP has lacked a central location. Today marks a new beginning as we open a new, suitable state secretariat, ending this period of homelessness,” he remarked.
In addition, Orbih advised members of the Edo PDP Caretaker Committee to refrain from making statements on behalf of the party, emphasizing that their positions lack legitimacy under the PDP constitution and cannot represent the party after attempting to undermine it.
“It saddens me to reflect on the decline of our party, which once had two senators and a majority in the House of Representatives. Now, we are left with no senators and only one representative, having lost the governorship to the All Progressives Congress (APC). As the National Vice Chairman for the South-South, I declare that those claiming to be members of the Edo PDP Caretaker Committee have no authority. Moving forward, we will recognize only those who are genuinely managing the PDP in Edo,” he concluded.
Orbih also praised Governor Monday Okpebholo for his humility and respect for traditional institutions in the state, commending his governance and encouraging him to maintain his approach. “Today, we witness a positive change in governance, and we appreciate your efforts,” he added.
