The senator representing Sokoto South, Aminu Tambuwal, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), blaming persistent internal disputes within the opposition party.
In a resignation letter dated March 11, 2026, and addressed to the PDP ward chairman of Tambuwal/Shinfiri Ward in Tambuwal Local Government Area, the former Sokoto governor explained that the decision followed wide consultations with his political allies and supporters.
Tambuwal stated that after careful reflection and discussions with key associates, he concluded that it had become necessary to step away from the PDP with immediate effect.
According to him, the continuous leadership disagreements, internal crises and widening divisions within the party had created an environment that made it increasingly difficult for him to remain a member.
Despite his departure, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives expressed gratitude to the PDP for the opportunities it provided him to serve the country in various leadership roles.
He noted that the party gave him the platform through which he served Nigeria as Speaker of the House of Representatives between 2011 and 2015 and later as governor of Sokoto State.
Tambuwal confirmed that he and several of his political associates have now aligned with the ADC, describing the move as part of a broader effort to strengthen democratic values and build a credible political alternative for Nigerians.
He emphasized that his decision was driven by the belief that Nigeria needs a stronger political platform anchored on integrity, accountability, inclusiveness and a firm commitment to national development.
Tambuwal, who governed Sokoto State from 2015 to 2023, was elected to the Senate in 2023 to represent Sokoto South. His defection is widely expected to reshape the political landscape in Sokoto State, where he remains one of the most influential political figures.
