Benin City Wins $1 Million Global Innovation Prize in Bloomberg Mayor’s Challenge

Benin City, the capital of Edo State, has gained international recognition after emerging among the global winners of the prestigious Bloomberg Mayor’s Challenge, securing a $1 million innovation prize. The competition drew entries from more than 600 cities across the world, with only 25 cities from 20 countries making the final selection. Benin City also distinguished itself as one of just four African cities that reached this stage of the competition.

The award places the historic city among leading global centres driving innovative solutions to urban challenges, particularly in the area of healthcare delivery.
Governor Monday Okpebholo, while reacting to the development, said the recognition reflects Edo State’s commitment to innovation and improved healthcare services for residents.

He noted that the achievement demonstrates the capacity of the state to develop impactful solutions capable of competing on the global stage.
The governor commended the Edo State Ministry of Health and the project team for their dedication and hard work in developing the initiative.

He also thanked the people of Edo State for their continued support for the government’s policies and programmes aimed at improving citizens’ wellbeing.
The Bloomberg Mayor’s Challenge is regarded as one of the world’s most competitive platforms for cities to showcase creative solutions to pressing urban problems.
