The Edo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing rural infrastructure, pledging to improve road networks that will ease the movement of agricultural produce across local communities.
This comes as the state prepares to implement the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP) — a federal government-backed initiative aimed at strengthening rural connectivity and expanding access to agricultural markets nationwide. Representing Governor Monday Okpebholo, the Commissioner for Works, Hon. Felix Akhabue, made the disclosure during a one-day stakeholders’ consultation meeting held in Benin City. The meeting was organised by the Edo State Government in partnership with the Federal Project Management Unit (FPMU) and other development partners.
Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed that his administration remains focused on sustainable infrastructure and inclusive development, stressing that:
“We are committed to continuing meaningful road projects across rural communities in Edo State. This reform is people-driven and built on a government–private partnership framework that promotes participatory budgeting. Our goal is to close the gap between urban and rural areas.” The consultation centered on two major components of the reform: the creation of a State Road Fund (SRF) and a Rural Access Road Agency (RARA) — both aimed at ensuring the sustainability of road maintenance and improving agricultural mobility.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Paul Ohonbamu, also highlighted that the RAAMP initiative would significantly reduce post-harvest losses and support rural livelihoods.
Representing the National Coordinator of RAAMP, Aminu Mohammed, Mr. Irabor Ehizojie noted that the project will deliver lasting solutions to rural infrastructure gaps and boost agricultural trade.
Similarly, State Project Coordinator, Owara Obamwonyi, stated that the initiative would “improve the welfare of rural communities and create economic linkages through better road networks.” A key highlight of the meeting was a presentation by Graham Smith, Lead Consultant from FPMU, who outlined the framework for reform and led an engaging session with traditional leaders, civil society representatives, and development partners on how to ensure the project’s long-term success.
