Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has officially launched the Omi Eko Project, a landmark initiative designed to transform water transportation across the state. The ambitious programme includes the deployment of 70 electric ferries, the upgrade of 20 jetties, and the modernisation of waterways infrastructure to create a more efficient, eco-friendly transit system.
Speaking during the unveiling, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the project as “a bold statement that Lagos will lead Africa in building a sustainable, connected, forward-thinking water transportation ecosystem.”
He explained that the initiative aligns with the state’s THEMES Plus Agenda, complementing earlier achievements such as the establishment of Africa’s first Waterways Monitoring and Data Centre, the expansion of ferry services, and enhanced maritime security. “Omi Eko is a forward-looking blueprint for sustainable mobility in Lagos. It blends technology with environmental responsibility, transforming our waterways into corridors of opportunity. As we say in Yoruba, Omi ni iye — water is life, water is connectivity, and water is the soul of Lagos,” the governor stated.
Sanwo-Olu revealed that the ₦410 million project was made possible through collaboration between the state government, development partners, private investors, and the people of Lagos. He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and French President Emmanuel Macron for fostering partnerships that encourage innovation and sustainable development. The Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, described Omi Eko as “innovation in motion,” noting that it complements Lagos’ multimodal transport policy integrating roads, rail, and waterways.
Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Blue Economy, Mr. Damilola Emmanuel, disclosed that 20 jetties and terminals will be upgraded, 15 waterways dredged, and new jobs created through the Vessel Industry Transition Programme, which will support operators in the informal water transport sector.
He added that water transport would serve as a key component in delivering a fully integrated, sustainable, and modern transportation network for Lagos State.
